The Big Boys Start Spending

The transfer window has well and truly opened, with 3 of the Big 4 teams making new acquisitions today, with a combined total of over £35m spent in one day!

Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal all had their cheque books out. One club spent £20m, another spent £17m, and the last one spent just £1m - you don't need us to tell you which manager decided that he could make do with a cut-price youngster with bags of potential...

First thing this morning, Jordan Henderson's £20m transfer from Sunderland to Liverpool was confirmed. Henderson is a box-to-box midfielder who has been capped for England, and who impressed everyone when he bossed the midfield as Sunderland beat Chelsea 4-0 at Stamford Bridge. David Ngog will make up some of the deal, but it takes spending at Anfield since J W Henry and his chums took-over to an incredible £72m! Admittedly they got £50m back, but still...!

It looks like it was an expensive day for Liverpool's fans too - there were rumours that Henderson was going to being joined at Liverpool by England U-21 colleague Phil Jones, with SkyBet even suspending the betting market on him joining the club after some BIG bets in the red half of the city. Unfortunately, whilst all this was going on, the aforementioned Phil Jones was actually on his way to Old Trafford for a medical! We feel sorry for the poor (now penniless) fans - I guess that’s what you get for listening too much to the press!

Jones will cost Manchester United around £17m. He played 5 matches for England's U21s last year, and will be at the heart of their defence in the U21s European Championships later this summer. His 25 stellar performances for Blackburn this season suggest United might have another Chris Smalling on their hands.

Arsenal also recruited a 19 year old U21-international defender, in the shape of Charlton's Carl Jenkinson. Carl has performed well in the 8 Charlton games he has played in since he signed as a pro, and has had one call up to the Finland U21 side. At just £1m he represents good business but, by the looks of it, he's very much one for the future. More defenders needed, Arsene!

The expected big-money 'marquee' signings by Chelsea and Manchester City haven't materialised yet, but can't be far off now!  We'll keep you posted!
